“Jerry, when did you last see Monica?”
“Maybe thirty-two years; graduation day. Why?”
“She’s approaching from behind you.”
“Wha—”
“Oh, ick! Hello Benjamin, and… you I could’ve died happy never seeing you again.”
“Um, hello Monica. What a surprise. How are—”
“Just seconds ago, I was fine.”
“Look, I’m sorry, for back— ”
“When you treated me like poison meat?”
“Yea. I apologize for being stupid.”
“And hateful. I’ll consider your apology but until decided… you can just rot.”
“Whoa, shots fired Monica! He apologized.”
“True. But some injuries cut too deep for simple apologies to reach.”

Wow, he must have said or done something incredibly horrible. Or maybe she needs to lighten up, for her own sake.

Thanks D.
You landed right where I hoped readers would – unclear as to who owns the next steps, a goal made acceptable by the rule of 99-words.
But I think we can agree these two should not be left alone together.
So glad you gave it a read 📚 😊

Yikes, the anger or perhaps just hurt that Monica is carrying. Nicely written, Gary.

Thanks Shari – both for reading my 99 words and for responding to them.
A few years ago I ran into a gal I knew in high school. Her reaction to meeting me unexpectedly was like Monica’s only not as verbose. I’d hoped for a warmer reception, but clearly she was still angry about something. I can only imagine what as there was no discussion offered. So I’m guessing, but am pretty sure I deserved her reception and regret that I didn’t even get the chance to apologize before everyone went their own ways.
Such things haunt the more mature me and some turn into stories to make sure I at least learned something from it.

It’s sad that she wasn’t able to move on, especially from something that happened in the years when we are still learning how to be our best selves. It’s tiring to carry around anger for any reason.
I’m always happy to stop in for a read Gary. Keep posting this good stuff.
